Sand Point Nature Preserve
Whether you’re looking to hike, bird watch, snowshoe or “leaf peep”, this 220 acre Nature Preserve is the perfect spot for your next outdoor adventure in Huron County.
A hidden gem on Huron County’s west side, the Sand Point Nature Preserve sits just south of Sand Point off of M-25. The Saginaw Basin Land Conservancy acquired the Preserve in 2008 and continues to own, manage, and preserve the property while allowing public access. According to the Land Conservancy’s website “The Saginaw Bay Herpetological Survey found Sand Point Nature Preserve to be the most biologically diverse site along the Saginaw Bay shoreline.” The Sand Point Nature Preserve is also the largest preserve managed by the organization!
With approximately 220 acres and nearly 5 miles of well established and well marked trails, the Sand Point Nature Preserve is an incredible community asset. In 2013, HCCF provided grant support to help with the construction of a boardwalk at the Preserve. After 11 years of regular use, the Saginaw Basin Land Conservancy applied for a grant to develop a new boardwalk that will accommodate higher water levels in the wetland area of the property and ensure safe and easy access for all visitors. HCCF proudly supported a $3,000 grant from our Recreation Resources Trust Fund and Natural Areas Preservation Fund to help build the new boardwalk! We can’t wait to plan a trip to the Preserve once the new boardwalk is installed.
The Saginaw Basin Land Conservancy also has an endowment fund at the Huron County Community Foundation with the specific purpose of supporting the organization’s work in Huron County.
